DESPITE atrocious weather on November 17, a capacity crowd turned out at the newly refurbished and upgraded Dalry Town Hall to enjoy the second in a monthly series of live music concerts known as the "Friday Night Music Club".
Organiser of the club and chairman of the Hall Committee, Mark Stoves, commented: "John Fenner, local jazz guitarist and former member of Kenny Ball & His Jazzmen, kindly agreed to help out with this particular concert, which we used to raise additional funds for the Town Hall. Originally, I approached John to play a solo gig, but he was keen to showcase the talents of friends he has played with for many years and admires for their playing skill, so all of a sudden we are playing host to a quartet of jazz legends!
John, on guitar, together with trumpet ace, Mike Daly, double bass legend, Tommy Evans and the irrepressible Jackie Murray on trombone.
"I then contacted local Dalry guitarist and songwriter,' Sally Campbell, who I had worked with at the Burnsong Songwriters Festival last year, and she said "Yes", straight away.
I then asked my pals, Russell Prince and Marcel Urbaniak, also from Dalry, and we have been playing together as 'BoNaFiDe" for the last year, and the second "Friday Night Music Club" line up was sorted.
Mark added, "All the artists from Dalry agreed to play for nothing to help with the fundraising." As part of the upgrade to the Hall includes a new portable stage system and stage electrics, Friday's concert was the first opportunity to try out some of the new equipment, and the results were very impressive and professional looking." Sally took to the stage with a short introductory set of self penned acoustic folk numbers. Accompanying herself on her treasured new "Martin" acoustic guitar, Sally's delicate vocals and simple playing style captivated an initially reticent audience and by the end of her first number, when she received a very warm response, the crowd realised just how talented this young girl is.
Next up were BoNaFiDe, an acoustic rock and pop trio, also from Dalry.
Playing an eclectic mix of classic rock and pop, the hour-long set was a tremendous personal triumph for vocalist Russell Prince, who only three months ago was diagnosed with cancer.
Although still undergoing chemotherapy, Russell wowed the sell out crowd with his vocal range, power and emotional interpretation of what, turned out to be some very poignant songs.
Marcel Urbaniak on lead guitar, played some very melodic solos and Mark Stoves' solid rhythm playing resulted in a well received set by the attentive audience.
Assembling in front of a suitably psychedelic backdrop, the Jazz Quartet, already impressed with the earlier acts, looked at each other in stunned amazement at how a little village in the heart of the Glenkens could stage such a professional looking and sounding concert.
Kicking off with the up tempo classic, Lady Be Good, this was followed by the superb Django Reinhardt number, "Nuages", featuring the superlative solo playing of John Fenner.
Each member took turns to showcase their extraordinary talent, with Tommy Evans' fluent double bass underpinning the whole set.
Mike Daly and Jack Murray both took turns on vocals.
Jack Murray's lively and spirited version of Blackbird, a particular highlight.
Both Mike and Jack's humour shone through in their between numbers patter, with a series of witty introductions causing outbreaks of serious laughter.
The next "Friday Night Music Club", featuring "The Sensational Mary Barclay Band", is on Friday, December 8. Tickets are priced at 6 in advance and 7 on the door. Tickets can be purchased from Newton's Grocers and the Top Shop, both in Main Street, Dalry. The concert will have a licensed bar. Doors open at 7.30pm and the concert starts at 8.00pm.
